concrete, using spray paint to 
work into its faux-wood texture. 
Two rounds of concept revisions 
with the Commission, then about 
a month from first sketch to final 
coat. An impressive turnaround!
The goal was modest on paper 
and larger in practice: make an 
otherwise utilitarian building 
worth noticing. “We really just 
wanted the restrooms to feel 
inviting, welcoming, and safe,” 
Rockstad said. Rocky Road has 
painted murals for the Seattle 
Storm and in public and commercial 
spaces across the region, but a 
neighborhood park project like this 
one is the kind it wants more of. 
“We’d love to continue bringing 
more murals and public art to life 
in the area,” Rockstad said. And it’s 
a safe bet the citizens of Normandy 
Park and our entire region would 
love to see that, too!
