MAKING A DIFFERENCE:
Mercy Ships
Mercy Ships is a global
nonprofit delivering free,
life-changing medical care
aboard hospital ships serving
coastal communities with
limited access to surgery.
Since 1978, volunteer
medical professionals have performed
thousands of procedures while also
training local healthcare workers to
create lasting impact. By mobilizing
ships where need is greatest, Mercy
Ships brings hope and healing to
some of the world’s most underserved
populations—transforming lives one
surgery, and one community, at a time.
dogs leashed near the shore. Maintain
distance from wildlife. Reduce pesticide
use. Lower carbon footprints. “It is truly the
unsexy things that will eventually make a
difference,” she says.
While the work may be complex, the
mission is clear. “Returning patients to
the ocean—that’s the goal,” says Mclean.
“That’s what we do this for.”
To ensure SR3’s patients get the individualized food
and medication they need to recover, they are given an
identification marker on top of their head once they come into
care. These biodegradable “hat tags” are glued onto their fur
and will fall off when they shed. This helps SR3’s staff and
volunteers tell who’s who at a glance.
