damp cleaning about once per week is a 
reasonable starting point, but frequency 
should reflect use, soil conditions, and 
manufacturer recommendations.
Always dust mop first. Wetting a 
dirty floor can turn loose grit into an 
abrasive slurry. Use a neutral-pH cleaner 
specifically labeled for finished wood 
sports floors, and measure the dilution 
accurately. Excess solution can leave 
residue, dull the finish, attract soil, and 
affect traction.
When machine scrubbing is not 
appropriate, use a low-moisture tacking 
system. Applicator pads or towels should 
be damp rather than wet and replaced as 
they become soiled.
Use Automatic Scrubbers with Caution
Automatic scrubbers can improve 
productivity, but only when the floor, 
finish, and equipment are compatible. 
Confirm that the warranty permits 
machine scrubbing and that the surface 
has no open seams, exposed wood, or 
damaged finish.
The machine’s loaded weight must 
be appropriate for the floor system, 
especially on suspended floors. Use the 
least aggressive effective pad, and verify 
that the vacuum and squeegee recover 
nearly all solution in one pass. Do not 
machine scrub a newly installed, newly 
sanded, or lightly coated floor without 
approval from the installer or finish 
manufacturer.
Remove Scuffs Promptly
Most scuff marks are rubber deposits 
from hard or dark shoe soles. Remove 
them before they accumulate, beginning 
with the gentlest method. A clean tennis 
ball mounted on a handle can remove 
many marks without damaging a 
properly finished floor.
