10 | SCHOOL PLANT MANAGER MAGAZINE | FALL 2026
Every school has a handful of doors
that take more abuse than anything
else in the building. Main entrances,
gym doors, and delivery doors may see
hundreds of cycles a day. They’re hit by
backpacks and carts, exposed to weather
on one side and cleaning chemicals
on the other, and often targeted by
vandalism. Most hollow metal doors
simply weren’t built for that level of
punishment, and it shows. Scratches,
dents, and rust appear quickly. Hardware
loosens, the door begins to sag, and
before long the opening becomes a
recurring maintenance problem.
“Facility managers don’t need more
recurring headaches. The right door can
eliminate one permanently.”
A Quick Look at Hollow
Metal Construction
Most exterior doors today are hollow
metal. Hollow metal doors utilize thin
steel sheets wrapped around a steel
frame with a polystyrene or honeycomb
core. This construction is strong but
unforgiving. When the steel skin is
dented, the damage is permanent.
Moisture reaches the metal through
scratches on the face or seams in the
construction and rust begins. Once

corrosion starts, it spreads quickly.
Welded seams fatigue and eventually
crack under repeated abuse. Hollow
metal performs well in interior locations,
but at highabuse exterior openings, its
weaknesses show fast.
Where FRP Comes In
Fiberglass reinforced polymer (FRP)
doors were developed to solve these
durability issues, and facility managers
across the K–12 and commercial
building world have taken notice.
FRP does not rust, rot, or corrode. It
resists moisture and impact in ways
steel cannot. And perhaps best of all,
FRP doors never need to be repainted.
For a facility manager stretching a
maintenance budget across multiple
buildings, that alone deserves attention.
Composite FRP vs Hybrid FRP
A traditional composite FRP door uses
fiberglass skins chemically welded to a
fiberglass frame with a honeycomb or
polystyrene core. These seamless doors
excel in highmoisture environments such
as pools and car washes.
Hybrid FRP doors take the concept
further. They pair FRP face sheets with
an engineered aluminum stileandrail
and tie rod construction. The core is
filled with pouredinplace, closedcell
polyurethane foam that bonds the
assembly together. The result is a door
noticeably lighter than steel, which
reduces wear on hinges, closers, and
frames. The aluminum edges act as
builtin edge guards, absorbing heavy
abuse without damaging the door. The
FRP faces can take a beating, even a
baseball hitting the door won’t leave a
dent. In addition, the textured, thrucolor
surface reduces and hides scratches.
Thermal Performance That
Shows Up on Utility Bills
Hybrid FRP doors also deliver strong
thermal performance. A poorly insulated
door is a constant, often unnoticed
drain on a school’s heating and cooling
system. Hybrid FRP doors routinely
outperform standard hollow metal doors
in energy calculations, without adding
weight or bulk.
Security and Code Compliance
K–12 buildings demand security,
reliable operation, and stringent safety
protocols. Hybrid FRP construction
